An office worker bit into what looked like a big human tooth


A woman had a nasty surprise when she discovered a tooth in her mouth that was not hers.

One does not normally expect there to be any teeth in one’s food other than one’s own, and one office worker got an unpleasant surprise recently when she took a bite of her lunch and found a large, apparently human tooth in her mouth.

According to Shanghaiist, the office worker was minding her own business and enjoying lunch at her office in Guangzhou, China, when she bit into something hard hidden in her food. She was horrified to spit it out and discover it was what looked like a human molar, about a centimeter long. She wasn’t the only person disturbed by the discovery; one of her coworkers reportedly threw up upon seeing the surprise tooth.

“It could not be a human tooth?” the bewildered office worker exclaimed.

But a dentist who later examined the tooth said it was not a human tooth after all. He said it probably came from a pig, which is marginally less horrifying than if it had come from a person.

The restaurant that supplied the meal reportedly said the tooth must have fallen in by accident while someone was chopping pork. They offered the office worker a refund on her lunch.

12 Red Flags To Watch For At The Dentist's Office

As if going to the dentist wasn&rsquot already nerve-racking enough, getting subpar service could leave you with more than just a sore set of chompers. &ldquoThere are some surefire warning signs that should make any patient wary of the care she&rsquos about to receive at a dental office,&rdquo says Jonathan Schwartz, DDS, a family and cosmetic dentist at Manhattan Dental Health. Not sure what to look for? We asked dentists to share the red flags that should have you scrambling out of the chair.

1. The office doesn't request your old dental records. Before you even show up for an appointment at a new dentist's office, the staff should be asking for these records as a baseline. "A lot of dentistry is about tracking problems and looking out for changes," Schwartz says. "While some problems may be very apparent, having previous records, especially X-rays, are crucial to recognizing developing issues." The dentist should also ask if you've had X-rays within the past 6 months, because repeating them too soon adds unnecessary radiation exposure with no medical benefit. According to the American Dental Association (ADA), healthy patients need a full set of X-rays every 2 years at the most.

2. They're using old technology.

3. They're not careful about germs. Obviously, you don't want to see the dentist or hygienist dig through drawers, adjust the light, or tap at a keyboard with gloved hands and then proceed to poke inside your mouth without first putting on a fresh pair of gloves. Then there's the sterility of the tools. "In my office, my instruments are stored in the sealed bags in which they are autoclaved, or heat-sterilized, until ready to be used in a patient's mouth," Schwartz says. "Also, you may see me change gloves several times during a procedure because we want to limit any kind of cross-contamination in our treatment rooms." Ask if the dentist autoclaves the tools with heat sterilization, since most bacteria die only with heat.

4. They don't do an oral cancer screening. At every visit, or at least every 6 months, your dentist should check your mouth for signs of oral cancers, Lowenberg says. You might think they're rare, but oral cancers linked to the human papilloma virus (HPV) have increased threefold over the past 2 decades, according to the American Association for Cancer Research. The exam involves looking for lesions, such as abnormal white or red patches of cells, on the mucous membranes. The dentist should feel the lymph nodes in your neck, lift your tongue and inspect both sides of it, and check the inside of your cheeks, gum tissue, and throat.

5. They recommend extensive work.

6. They're a household name&mdashbut not in a good way. If the dental practice advertises flamboyantly or offers deep discounts and Groupon deals, they could be more focused on getting new patients than keeping the ones they have. &ldquoDentists should certainly be advertising,&rdquo says Sonny Chokka, DDS, a Smile Generation&ndashaffiliated dentist in Rialto, CA. &ldquoBut if it appears to be excessive on an ongoing basis, it may indicate that their patient flow is a leaky bucket from unfavorable patient experiences.&rdquo

7. They don't have a wall of fame. The dentist may not hang before and after transformations around for all to see, but if you ask for photos of a cosmetic procedure you&rsquore considering, they should be available. &ldquoEvery dentist should be prepared to show their work, not only when asked, but they should proudly display it throughout the office,&rdquo Chokka says. &ldquoYou want to know your dentist has done this before successfully!&rdquo And if he hasn&rsquot, find another dentist.

8. They recommend removing amalgam fillings because they're "toxic."Most dentists no longer use traditional silver fillings, a mix of liquid mercury and an alloy of silver, tin, and copper, but if you already have it in older cavities, they're not dangerous, according to the FDA. The fillings would need to be switched out only if they've begun to corrode and shrink away from the tooth surface, which creates openings for bacteria to settle in, Schwartz says. And removal can be risky. "You should question if the dentist wants to remove the silver filling under a rubber dam with high-speed evacuation," Schwartz warns. "The mercury vapors released from drilling out all silver fillings is more harmful than leaving the fillings in place." The force of the removal also has the potential to take some bits of tooth with it, causing your tooth to crack.

9. They try to upsell you on caps or crowns.

10. Their gear is not made in the USA. If you&rsquore in a position to get dental restorations, crowns, veneers, inlays, fixed bridges, implants, dentures, orthodontic appliances, or other custom dental gear, ask the dentist where it will be manufactured. &ldquoI would seriously question the competency of a dentist who is outsourcing their lab work to a different country,&rdquo Chokka says, since that could mean cut-rate products. &ldquoIt indicates that their bottom line is more important than the quality of their dentistry and your health.&rdquo Ask what labs the dental practice uses and whether they have computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) in their office for same-day dentistry.

11. They sell extras. Dentists should focus on the health of your teeth and promoting good dental hygiene&mdashnot meeting a monthly sales quota. "If a dentist sells vitamins or other dietary supplements, claiming that it will help your oral hygiene, that would suggest that he's just trying to sell things to make money," Lowenberg says. Ditto for Botox and dermal fillers, which are best left to dermatologists and plastic surgeons.

12. They treat you like just another set of teeth. If the dentist greets you with &ldquoopen wide,&rdquo you might want to stay clamped shut. &ldquoA 21st-century dentist realizes that there's a person connected to the teeth,&rdquo Chokka says. &ldquoShe makes an effort to be compassionate and a great listener and strives to establish a personal relationship with her patients.&rdquo That also means giving you choices whenever possible, since in dentistry, as in life, one size doesn't fit all. &ldquoPatients are different from each other, their ability to pay is different, and their roadblocks to treatment are different,&rdquo Chokka says. &ldquoA competent dentist strives to provide a unique experience and personalized treatment plan for each and every patient.&rdquo

Bandages make terrible pizza toppings

Allow us to paint a truly nauseating scenario for you. You stroll into the kitchen and open up the fridge to grab a cold slice of leftover pizza. You take a bite and soon realize that it's not just a really chewy pepper you're munching on but a used bandage — oh, and there's some dried blood on it.

That's exactly what Ken Wieczerza of Ballston Lake, New York claimed happened when he ordered a pizza from Pizza Hut in 2011. "It felt kind of like biting into a folded-up piece of plastic," Wieczera recalled. "I can't think of anything more disgusting than chewing on a bandage, other than a body part. Fortunately, I didn't swallow it."

The blue bandage had allegedly been baked into the crust by a careless employee. After making the horrifying discovery, Wieczera sealed it in a plastic bag to bring to Pizza Hut's attention. Wieczera insisted that he only wanted Pizza Hut to reimburse him for his blood work testing, but said that the company gave him the cold shoulder. Even though Wieczera said he never showed the slice to the company he said Pizza Hut's cronies insisted he was wrong and told him that "the bandage style and dough type were not consistent with Pizza Hut protocol."

Ahhh, there it is. Pizza Hut uses a different "bandage style" for their pizza toppings.

Washington Woman Finds Rare Purple Pearl Worth $600 in Her Food While Dining Out

A woman from Issaquah, Washington, recently bit down on a rare purple Quahog pearl while dining at her favorite Italian restaurant.

Lindsay Hasz was on "a rare date night without the kids" with her husband, Christopher, a few weeks ago at Montalcino Ristorante Italiano when she bit down on "something really, really hard."

"I felt like I almost broke my tooth when I first bit it," she told ABC News with a laugh. "It was pretty dark in the restaurant, so it was hard to tell what it was, but when I looked at it closer, it looked totally round and perfect. Too perfect."

Hasz showed the pearl to gemologist Ted Irwin, president of the Northwest Geological Laboratory and director of the Northwest Geological Institute.

"The Mr. Skeptic in me originally may have dissuaded her at first since a lot of pearls people find aren't really anything most of the time," Irwin told ABC News. "But I took a look at it, and sure enough, she did have Quahog pearl."

Irwin explained that the pearl is actually found in clams "indigenous to the Atlantic states, the New England area." He added that he believed the chances of finding a natural, gem-quality pearl like the one Hasz found is probably "one in a couple million."

Based on the pearl's surface attributes, roundness and color, Irwin estimated the purple gem to be a little over one carat and worth $600 in today's marketplace.

Hasz said when she told the restaurant owners -- Fernando and Cindy Nardone -- of Irwin's findings, they were "so excited."

"We only serve the finest for our customers," Fernando told ABC News. Added Cindy, "Coming to our restaurant is like winning the lottery!"

The restaurant owners added that they now have guests coming in and specifically asking for the dish Hasz ordered, the frutti di mare, in the hopes of finding another rare pearl.

As for Hasz, she said she plans on turning her pearl into a necklace and keeping it as a good luck charm.

Lucia DeClerck is an absolute marvel. The 105-year-old New Jersey resident lived through the devastating 1918 Spanish Flu outbreak and now she has not only survived the second global pandemic of her lifetime, but she powered through her own case of COVID-19. 

"I&aposm very fortunate," she told 6ABC from her residence at Mystic Meadows Rehab and Nursing Center in Little Egg Harbor, New Jersey. "I&aposm feeling wonderful." The outlet reports that DeClerck never displayed any symptoms of the respiratory illness, even after testing positive for coronavirus. (But she did spend 14 days in the COVID unit at Mystic Meadows.) 

When pushed for her &apossecret&apos to her longevity𠅊nd her successful recovery from COVID�lerk initially shrugged the question off, and said that all she did was pray. "And [I] don&apost eat junk food," she added. 

But her granddaughter, Shawn Laws O&aposNeil, said that maybe there was something that helped DeClerk&aposs lifespan stretch past the century mark: a daily serving of gin-soaked golden raisins. "She said it kept her free of disease," O&aposNeil said. "She&aposs never had cancer. She has all her own teeth." According to The New York Times, DeClerck starts every day with a serving of nine of the alcohol-enhanced raisins, and the recipe couldn&apost be easier. "Fill a jar," she said. "Nine raisins a day after it sits for nine days."

DeClerck&aposs daughter-in-law Lillie Jean Laws said that, during the decade that DeClerck lived with them, she also downed a mysterious drink that was kept in the back of the refrigerator. Laws didn&apost know everything that was in the "root-beer-looking" beverage, but it seemed to be a combination of aloe vera juice, apple cider vinegar, ginger, and "a little bit of gin." 

"I would watch her and I would just shudder when she drank this stuff," Laws told "When she got older, I started asking her, what did she put in that stuff? She was lasting better than we were."

DeClerck has two surviving sons (she has outlived one of her sons), five grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great grandchildren. A little over a year ago, her family got together to celebrate her 104th birthday, but they have postponed the party for her 105th until it is safer for them to be together.

12 Things Your Dentist Knows About You Just By Looking In Your Mouth

While cavities and plaque build-up may be what's on your mind before a teeth cleaning, your dentist is looking for a whole lot more. "The mouth is the window to the body," says David Silverstrom, DDS, of The Silverstrom Group in Livingston, NJ. "Often, diseases like cancer, anemia and diabetes will first be identified by the dentist in a regular examination, and this saves lives." And it's not just diseases&mdashdentists can discover everything from your bad habits to your favorite beverages simply by asking you to say, "Ahh!"

1. You flossed right before your appointment&mdashand that's the only time.
Sorry, but you can't fool your dentist into thinking you floss daily by doing so the night before or morning of your visit. "The gums of people who only floss right before a visit are bleeding or look damaged," says Timothy Stirneman, DDS, of All Smiles Dental in Algonquin, IL, "whereas, healthy gums are nice and tight and pink," he says. Kenneth Wong, DDS, of Santa Monica adds, "When patients floss right before coming for a cleaning, I can see the slices where the floss cut at the gum because they were overzealous."

2. You're pregnant.
"Nearly 40% of women will develop gingivitis during their pregnancy," says Glen Stephenson, DMD, of Prevention Dental in Boise, ID. "This is caused by increased progesterone, which facilitates the growth of bacteria, causing gingivitis. Some women will develop a deep red lump on their gums called a pregnancy tumor or pyogenic granuloma." (This type of tumor is completely benign and will go away after the pregnancy is over.) Stirneman adds that most women are typically pretty far along before their gums start bleeding, so it's not as though a dentist will magically "discover" that a patient is pregnant.

3. You bite your nails.

Without looking at your hands, a dentist may be able to detect this habit. "Signs include chips and cracking of the teeth, plus wear and tear on the teeth from the constant stress on them," says Keith Arbeitman, DDS, of Arbeitman & Shein in New York City. "This can cause your teeth to become uneven and lead to jaw pain and discomfort." Kyle Stanley, DDS, of Helm, Nejad, Stanley in Beverly Hills adds, "Patients that bite their nails using their front teeth usually have leveled off, flat front teeth. The nails themselves are not what cause the damage, but rather the contact that occurs between the top and bottom teeth," he says.

4. You used to suck your thumb.
"Most children that suck their thumbs or a finger have no long-term effects from the habit," says Stephenson. "However, those who did so past the age of seven or eight may show significant changes to their bite or the position of their teeth. Much of that can be corrected through orthodontic treatment, but some telltale signs can remain." Alice Lee, DDS, of Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, NY, adds, "We can sometimes see protruding front teeth, and this can impact how kids' jaws are coming together and growing and can also impact their speech."

5. Your bad breath may mean something.
"General bad breath can be categorized as halitosis," says Arbeitman. But dentists are also trained to identify "fruity" smells and "fishy" smells, which can mean numerous things. " 'Fruity' breath could indicate uncontrolled diabetes or a dietary fast that has gone too far, while 'fishy' breath could be a sign of kidney or liver failure," he explains. If the smell is "very foul," says Arbeitman, it could be anything from gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) to an underlying lung abscess and bronchitis to a tonsil stone. Timothy Chase, DMD, of SmilesNY in New York City, adds, "The first thing the dentist should do is rule out the odor coming from the teeth and gums. After that, he should recommend that the patient see an ENT to rule out sinus issues, and a GI doc to rule out reflux issues."

6. You may have an eating disorder.
"Many patients are surprised that their dentist is the first one to ask about eating disorders," says Chase, "but bulimia exhibits a very distinct pattern of tooth wear that your dentist can easily identify." Stephenson notes that, "This erosion happens almost exclusively on the tongue-side of the front teeth and can contribute to increased cavities." But Silverstrom is quick to point out that acid erosion on the back of a patient's teeth does not always indicate an eating disorder. He says other possibilities include acid reflux and the use of antidepressants or mood-elevating drugs, both of which reduce the amount of saliva in the mouth, thereby upping the odds of acid damage.

7. You have a sinus infection.
"Often patients will call saying that they need a root canal," explains Ira Handschuh, DDS, of The Dental Design Center in NY, "when in fact it's actually a sinus infection and not a tooth problem at all." The reason, he explains, is because the roots of the top teeth are positioned in the same area as the floor of the sinuses. And both sinus infections and toothaches can show symptoms of pressure. "A simple home test is to have a patient bend over to touch their toes. If the pressure or pain increases just by doing this, the pain is most likely not tooth-related and he should see his ENT or primary care physician before coming to the dentist," he advises.

8. You have a vitamin deficiency.

"A deficiency of vitamins and minerals can cause many oral conditions, like burning tongue syndrome, tissue sloughing off, increased infections, delayed healing, bone infections, and easy-to-bleed gums," explains John P. Dougherty, DDS, MAGD, of Artistic Dental at the Biltmore in Phoenix, AZ. Stephenson adds, "Surprisingly, iron deficiencies show up in many ways in your mouth. It can give some patients severe sores in the corners of their mouth while others have changes in their tongues. Some may experience a painful burning sensation, or all the small papillae fall off their tongue leaving it glossy and smooth. Getting more iron will solve these problems."

9. You have diabetes.
"Many times, imbalances in sugar will show a rapid change in the health of your gums, including increased swelling, bleeding, and sensitivity," says Handschuh. "In conjunction, the consistency of saliva may change, and there may be increased decay. These may all be signs of sugar levels that are out of control, so dentists can alert patients to see their doctor to check for diabetes."

10. You have a drinking problem.

"Alcoholic patients are cavity-prone because alcohol tends to dry the mouth out," says David Tarica, DMD, of 34th Street Dental in New York City. "A dry mouth will lead to cavities, because saliva neutralizes the damage-causing acid in our mouths. In addition, alcoholics have 'chipmunk red cheeks,' and the smell alone is usually a giveaway."

11. You have oral cancer.
"The first signs of oral cancer can be seen from the following: unexplained bleeding in the mouth, white, red, or speckled patches in the mouth, a change in the way your teeth fit together, swellings, thickenings, lumps or bumps or eroded areas on the lips, gums, or other areas inside the mouth," explains Michael Apa, DDS, of Rosenthal Apa Group in New York City. "An oral surgeon should be consulted for a biopsy of any suspicious tissue."

You may know why you chipped your tooth, but Hugh Flax, DDS, of Flax Dental in Atlanta says that even though the cause may be apparent, "there could be underlying factors that weakened the tooth and made it susceptible to being chipped in the first place." He explains that teeth can be softened by sodas and other sugary beverages over time, which may make a tooth more susceptible to chipping. Energy drinks, which tend to be even more acidic than soft drinks, may cause even more damage to tooth enamel, he says.

Woman calls animal control over a tree ɼreature' that was actually a croissant

Animal welfare representatives are breathing a sigh of relief after a panicked phone call to their local offices about a strange creature in a tree turned out to be nothing more than a … croissant.

According to a BBC report and a Facebook post, a woman in Krakow, Poland, called her local animal help center, asking for help with something caught in a tree earlier this week:

The full story in the caption gets a bit long, but apparently the woman told officials that "this creature … he's been sitting in a tree across the block for two days! People don't open windows because they're afraid it's going to enter their house!"

After some description, she suggested it might be an iguana ("legwan" in Polish).

The officials had to confirm that it wasn't an April Fool's Day prank.

The woman then needed to know they were kneaded on site to fix things immediately. After all, as the storyteller (the post is on the Facebook page for the Krakow Animal Welfare Society, which was reporting from Inspector Adam's "Inspector's Diary") explained, maybe someone threw an animal out and it landed in the tree. Perhaps it really was a legwan.

So experts came out, did a search of the neighborhood and there it was, the creature.

Inspector Adam suggested that the pastry was probably tossed out a window to feed the birds, "and the poor guy got stuck in the fork of lilac twigs (He was sitting there and looked pretty good, releasing his imagination, taking on reptilians, he was almost moving, he was already preparing for the invasion, he was already beginning to look like a dragon child, the surrounding virgins were already trembling. Seems like Inspector Adam has a vivid imagination.
